About the Practical Nursing Diploma

Description

The Practical Nursing program exposes you to a variety of classroom and clinical experiences to prepare you for employment in nursing homes, hospitals and other healthcare settings. Upon program completion, you will be eligible to take the licensure exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Nursing Assistant training is required prior to petitioning for this program.

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are in high demand in various healthcare settings.

LPN to ADN Progression

If you are a licensed practical nurse interested in a career as a registered nurse, this program is for you. Your work experience may earn you advanced-standing credits. Graduates are eligible to take the RN Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN).

Registered Nursing

Prepare for a registered nursing (RN) career at MATC. Theory and lab courses on campus set the foundation for your clinical practice. Simulation and guided practice in clinical settings further prepare you for practice as an RN. Graduates are eligible to take the RN licensure exam (NCLEX-RN).

Program Outcomes

Practical Nursing Program End of Program Student Learning Outcomes

  • Integrate Practical Nursing identity reflecting integrity, responsibility and nursing standards
  • Communicate basic information using multiple sources in nursing practice
  • Utilize theoretical knowledge to participate in decision making
  • Apply the nursing process to basic client care across diverse populations
  • Function as a healthcare team member to provide safe and effective care

Admission Requirements

This program admits students through a petition selection process.

The following are required for admission:

  • TEAS pre-qualifying exam, required score: 58.7%
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Nursing Assistant training
  • B- or higher in the following courses:
    • BIOSCI-177* or BIOSCI-201* and 202*
    • Sciences must be taken within the last five years
  • C or higher in the following courses:
    • High school biology and chemistry, or one semester of college-level biology and chemistry
    • ENG-195 and ENG-196 or 197 or ENG-201* and 202*
    • General Education courses
  • Fall start: Petition for program in March
